Microscale tissue strains were calculated from photo bleached line displacements in fluorescently stained articular cartilage tissue under shear loading. Shear strain magnitudes at the tissue surface were notably higher in a subset of the inflammatory synovial fluid population, and were decreased with the addition of hyaluronic acid (HA). Addition of HA to the non-Inflammatory synovial fluid group had no effect on shear strain magnitudes.
