Measurements of local strains demonstrates distinct tribological phenotypes of arthritic synovial fluid and efficacy of viscosupplementation

Microscale tissue strains were calculated from photo bleached line displacements in fluorescently stained articular cartilage tissue under shear loading. Shear strain magnitudes at the tissue surface were notably higher in a subset of the inflammatory synovial fluid population, and were decreased with the addition of hyaluronic acid (HA). Addition of HA to the non-Inflammatory synovial fluid group had no effect on shear strain magnitudes.
